I believe it is also possible to hack the icon of a hotkey (assigned a macro) to reference another icon you have the icon ID for. How to do this...
1) On your main toon, drag the macros you want to customize to a hotbar
2) now save your hotkeys to a txt file.
3) create a new character of a class you don't think you'll ever use.
4) on that toon, make macros that use the icons of any class abilities who's icons you are unlikely to use on your main or see applied by an NPC or another toon.
5) Drag the icons to a hotbar and save the hotkeys to a txt file.
6) open the txt file, icon ID should be number immediately after the word "macro"
7) copy past IDs from the alt's hotkey file over to your main's file.
8) on your main, load the edited hotkeys.
The loaded hotkeys should be using the new icons. Now if you want to, you can figure out what DDS files contain those icons and change their graphics.
Note: I'm not entirely sure that number in the hotkey file is in fact an icon reference, but I seam to recall that's what it is.
