Trouble saving dds files.

ok I'm modifying the Knowledge window I get the spellbook graphic to display but don't want black around the edges of the book. Normally thats the Transparency layer in a gif but when I save the file as dds (no Alpha) it still shows the black border around the edges of the book. How are you all saving the dds so that the backgrounds are still transparent?
