The same Pallet that has the Layers Tab also has a CHannels Tab, click that and you should see the Alpha layer at the bottom, bellow the RGB, Red, Blue and Green channels.

Alpha is usually greyscale. Black = fully transparent. White = fully opaque. Grey levels inbetween = percentages of transparency, so 50% black = 50% transparent
