Do I NEED to run updater every time I play?

Or can I just run updater occasionally to update my maps and poi's and then just start EQ2 normally, without going through the updater?

I only ask, because I swear I read somewhere that you need to start EQ2 through the updater EVERY time you play. Maybe I read it wrong, and I cant seem to find where I read it now.

Stupid question probably, but I am curious.
