Default EQ2 Memory Used -- I'm Impressed

Just sitting here browsing the net while in trader mode in EQ2. I decided to hit alt-ctrl-delete to see how much memory EQ2 was taking from my system and I was quite surprised to see 356k. All I can say is wow. I have quite high settings, not maximum in everything, but most things are turned way up... If I remember correctly EQ1 took anywhere fom 400-500k at times. I'm impressed

It may be low because when your in trader mode, your the only one in your room and there isn't very much happening... And as long as there isn't much to calculate (i.e., lots of movement, other characters - both NPC and PC), then you aren't going to use much memory...

Default Just as a memory side-question

Has anyone experience a progressive EQ2, um how do I describe this, "sluggishness" after the game has been on for a while? I instintually ascribe this to a memory leak but it seems like the 1gig is not being used too fully. I have pretty much made it a rule to restart after the game has been on for more than 5 hours. Anyone else see the same kind of thing happening?

In city zones I don't think I've seen it go above 400k, if I'm remembering correctly.

As for EQ2 getting slowly "laggier", yes I experience it after zoning a lot and play for a while. I either restart EQ2 totally or restart my computer (which is best).

That happens to me but its about 2 or 3 hours not 5 hours. I am also only playing on a 1.8 GHZ w/ 512 and a GeForce FX 5200 vid card (128 bit)

It seems like I start lagging a bit in the bigger zones (Qeynos Harbor, North Q, South Q)

if you play 5 hours straight you can take the time to shower and let your memory clear itslef with a cold reset

Reading through the tech forums some have experienced that if you switch back and forth from window mode it clears their memory problem. So you can continue to play EQ2 longer then 5 hours... . I could never play that long in one sitting but some guild members of mine can.

Yeah, I've noticed that if I zone more than a couple times, then the game starts getting really sluggish in dungeon zones. The outdoors areas are still ok for the most part.

I've also come to the conclusion that it's not time-related. I had to run to the Crypt beneath Qeynos, which requires zoning three times. By the time I reached the Crypt, I was sluggish --and I had just started EQ no more than 5 minutes ago.

There was a solution to this bug posted in the Sony forums a while back.

Update your .NET framework to 2.0 beta (or possibly uninstall the .NET framework entirely) and your memory usage issues should vanish. It seems that .NET 1.1 has a memory leak related to DirectX somehow.

I can't seem to find the post now, looking at Sony's forums. Odd.

Anyhow, installing .NET 2.0 beta completely fixed the memory leak for me, on three different computers, one with an ATI card, and two with NVidia cards.

Default Aha

That would seem to make sense as the app might be looking to run the xml through my machine's on-board .net instance.

Pardon my lack on knowledge in this area (plus I am very touchy about installing programs of such in my system)...

But are you talking about NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 1 (x86). I just want to make sure that I am downloading the right file... Thanks in advance...

It doesn't make a difference. The person that gave that tip, I thought said it didn't help.

As why I know this personally? I've had that installed since it came out... much longer before I started playing EQ2.

hmm. Well, it worked for me, on both of my computers, and for one of my friends, making three different computers with different specs. Maybe there are multiple leaks happening?

I don't think any game is leak proof, hehe...

But you can't blame any MMORPG... just think about how much is loading, and unloading when you zone. A LOT of stuff I half or fully expect any game like it to get like it twice as fast as it does....

Not to turn this into a thread about how good/bad the coding or whatever is in Everquest 2, but I've never played an MMORPG or any game (that wasn't beta) which crashed or churned to unplayable as fast or as often as EQ2 used to, before I installed .NET 2.0

I don't think that anyone is complaining about EQ2 though, we just want to compare notes on how to fix the memory issues.

Yeaupers... it could very well be some other odd problem... as well....

On my other computer I don't have .NET installed at all... and I see no difference to this computer with it... but like I said... who knows eh?

I too have the slowly degraded performance over time, and after once batch of lurching around I caught my pagefile at 1.2gig.

I might try that .net suggestion ...

I have 1 gig of RAM and I manually set my pagefile to 768 (or so) as I've seen suggested around the net. I just got done playing EQ2 (about a 3 hour session) and my computer has been on all day. I haven't played any other games except for a demo I downloaded. My pagefile is at 354. And yes I'm using .NET (if it makes a difference )

A problem I experienced early on was that my video card would go buggy and I would get lines through the screen. Switching between window and full screen fixed.

The permenant solution was to download driver cleaner 3 (http://www.drivercleaner.net/dc.htm) run it on my machine to clean up history of video drivers then reinstall the drivers.

Good tip on the other item to install, I'll try that (the problem still happens occassionaly but not every session anymore).

One thing that I noticed that is very nice with EQ!!'s memory usage is that when you have the program minimized is that it unloads most of itself from memory. I've seen it as low as 35k and been able to tab back into game and be able to play for a few hours.

I've been in the middle of a crowded dungeon tabbed-out and minimized (some guildies wanted me in their group while they did a CR...I made the dungeon grey for them), and was able to browse the net, have my mail client open, and be running a movie on my computer to my TV at the same time.

I have a pretty junky system too.

Tonight, I just realised that for the last couple of days I have been playing with no page file, and I only have 1g of memory and a junky FX5200 card.

eq2 in windowed mode, but onscreen, you can get the memory useage ontop of the window, so I highly doubt it "unloads" anything, lol.

Just did some testing on this subject:

I'm using the abbreviation Mb (Megabit) here because I'm not exactly sure whether the K in Task Manager stands for KB (Kilobyte) or Kb (Kilobit), so I'll err in favour of SOE, and use Megabits

EQ2 was using almost 450Mb in fullscreen mode, and switching to windowed mode did nothing for the memory usage.

When you minimize EQ2, the memory usage for it goes immediately to 25Mb, but then starts climbing up again.

Regardless of the state of EQ2 (minimized, restored in windowed mode) the game seems to increase memory usage at a rate of about 2Mb every 5 seconds. After reaching around 150Mb, the memory usage increase slows down, and seemed to even out at about 200Mb.

Exactly how EQ2 got to 450Mb when I was in fullscreen mode, I'm not sure.
