It may break after the last update. Just visit http://updater.pala.de and click launch, it will be restored automatically then.

Sounds like the keystore file got damaged. You may want to delete the file in
%appdata%\Sun\Java\Deployment\security

Reboot to make sure there is no other instance of the updater running. If the hsqldb still throws errors, choose "Reset all settings" from the Settings -> Updater menu within the updater.
Looks like something seriously damaged your file system. You may want to run checkdisk on your hard drive.

Always refer to exactly what error you have also. And please include the whole thrown exception as I am bad at guessing

Tested the updater on my pc at work which never had it installed before. Working as expected, so there is no general problem.

I've tried running it from the link provided above, and nothing. Looked for the AppData folder in the Robert subfolder of the Users directory and don't see it. Any ideas?

Thumbs Up

I had the same error too, exactly. I followed Kaldran's link in the second post on this thread and it worked right away. No uninstalling, wiping, reinstalling needed. Very easy.

Thanks!

I've read this thread and deleted all files from the /security folder as Kaldran mentioned. I also rebooted the computer. When attempting to open the AutoUpdater, I received:

CouldNotLoadArgumentException[ Could not load file/URL specified: C:\Documents and Settings\Christopher\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\26\59901d5a-774e8d42]
at com.sun.javaws.Main.launchApp(Unknown Source)
at com.sun.javaws.Main.continueInSecureThread(Unknown Source)
at com.sun.javaws.Main$1.run(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)

Now, I tried to find out how to reset the settings but was unsuccessful. That is my stumbling block. All assistance is deeply appreciated.

Thats because these are completely different errors. If it can't find its cached files anymore they got deleted. Usually happens after you update Java.
To fix this just launch it once from http://updater.pala.de

If it starts up with an error about wrong signatures now, just launch it a few more times til it updates itself automatically.
I had to make some fundamental changes on startup procedures to make it more flexible. More about that Soon(tm) .. maybe :P
