Default Auto Updater Error

I am getting the following. And it has changed frequently to other errors much longer in length. Overall, I can't run the updater and haven't for the past few days. I have even gone to the link provided in another post to try it straight from that site but nothing. My Java is updated so that isn't the issue, either. HELP!

Unhappy The Updater hates me...

I don't know what I am doing wrong, if anything but every few days I keep getting errors when I start the auto updater. Its getting rather annoying.

I've reset my settings like 3 times since my last thread. I really hate making new threads (edit by gm9: merged you into it - I always close them when the issues appear to be resolved, it's no problem if you make a new thread if that was not the case ) but I would really like to know what it is that is going wrong and how to fix it. I love this UI far too much. It becomes a pain to have to reset my settings, save my LoginData file and my Quick raid file and reselect my preferences each time I can't get it to work. But it seems to be the only fix I know of. Any suggestions?

When I go into my changelog I get this:

It just means that it can't find the URL for the various files in its database. Which usually means the database is corrupted somehow, even though there are several failsafe mechanisms.
As this does not seem to be a general problem, please go to %appdata% (e.g. by typing that into the Start -> Run command box) and delete the whole 'ProfitUI Reborn Downloader' folder. Just to be sure you may want to deinstall the updater and install it again.

If it fails again, I would guess that either some driver (like IDE or SATA) is having some problems or that your harddisk is near its end of life.

Couldn't be your buggy code, could it?

If it does not work, you likely installed it incorrectly. Always try a clean install before reporting bugs.

At least it is highly unlikely as hsqldb api is handling all database connections.

The error message tells me that it can't find the value called 'baseURL' in the database. This causes it to try to load the url 'variants.txt' which throws this exception (as it misses the protocol handler obviously).

The program itself does not contain code to change that value, so the only valid reason why it is not there anymore is that the database itself got corrupt. Of course that can have various reasons like hardware or software conflicts or maybe even the java vm is not shutting down like it should (VM shutdown triggers the database shutdown). The interesting thing is, that the files themselves seem intact as the updater can open them and doesn't automatically replace them with a backup.

It only happens every few days, resetting the database fixes the error, and there isn't a thread with lots of complaints. I won't say it has nothing to do with the updater itself, but it is a problem located on that single machine. Maybe some software is messing around with the database files for some reason.

If it happens again, please go to '%appdata%\ProfitUI Reborn Downloader' and zip up all the files you find in there and send them to me or post them here.

heh, it -only- happens every few days. yea, it happens every few days but its very very frustrating. And I'm having a hard time believing its my harddisk cause its relatively new but it is a possibility. I am giving your solution a try and I hope it works. Thank you, I'll keep you posted.

So it worked when I did what you said to do but when I try to start the updater today it gives me an application Error window and says its unable to launch the application.

It gave me these two reasons: (It didn't look anything like the other post but what do I know lol )

I am attempting another clean install... and from the site itself. Will keep you posted but if you can give me any insight, its appreciated. /sigh

EDIT: I did the install and replaced my icons and it seems to be working again. Hope it lasts.

Here is the Zip. Was going to PM it but unless I missed something, I couldn't. heh. Hope it helps.

PS. I did reset the settings prior to getting your reply so not sure if that screws things up on your end. If so, I'll wait for it to not work again since it seems to do it a lot for me. Thank you again.

There was actually a bug in the updater which causes this exception, unfortunately fixing it won't help you most likely.

When either the file updater.script or the file updater.data is missing (which both contain data), the database cannot be restored from the backup since it may not be consistent anymore. In this case the updater copies the default files back into place (pretty much the same way as when you click the 'Reset settings' option). Obviously this can fail under some circumstances which then throws the exceptions. I fixed this so it is now always able to reset its data.

That means you will not see the exceptions again, but your updaters' settings will reset every few days. Again, this is because either updater.script or updater.data is missing, so something on your machine deletes them. Are you running any kind of cleanup software before this error occurs? If not, an imminent hardware failure may still be the cause....

It's possible, I use Eset(Nod32) and Spyware Doctor (the free version) and ZoneAlarm It seems to happen more often than when Spyware Doctor runs a scan (and I clean what needs to be cleaned). But that could, very well, be the reason. I Haven't uses CCleaner as of yet to cause any of this. So the only thing I can think of is Spyware Doctor. Which is odd cause I have always used it and this has just been a fairly recent issue.

If you like, I will keep an eye on when it scans my pc and see if an instant result is this issue. I didn't notice it before but I could have just overlooked the possibility. Thank you again for the feedback.
