Smile Updater in Ubuntu

This may have been asked and answered before but please bare with me on this. Has anybody had any luck using the updater in Linux? It runs for me, but doesn't seem to allow me to set my eq2 directory so I cant update. I'm an a maintainer for EQ2 in the wine appdb, if there is a way to get this to work I would like to pass it along there as well.

I have never tried this in WINE but I had tried the old (non webstart) version in native Linux and it worked without issues.

If it does not work, you likely installed it incorrectly. Always try a clean install before reporting bugs.

Well the webstart version doesn't get handled by wine because Java is cross platform, but wine is an idea I could try in addition to the older version. Thanks for the ideas!

Where can I get a copy of the old updater?

The old version is not supported anymore and would not work. I'm sure Kaldran who wrote the updater will see this thread though and maybe he has an idea if you can provide more information as to what exactly happens when you try to set the path.

I don't see why it should not work. Make sure you use Sun Java. Easiest way to get it is to use aptitude to install 'sun-java6-plugin' from the multiverse repository.

I just tried this on a fresh Ubuntu 8.10 with Sun Java 6 and the issue I ran into is that the EQ2 path selection dialog is empty except for a single / entry. Not sure if this is the issue the OP is facing though.

As this is the root directory, I would call it "working as intended" In Windows there are more options because of the different drive names.
Just doubleclick it.

This is the issue I'm having exactly... and double clicking it does me no good.

It also doesn't work to enter the path directly in the box.

Question

How does the auto-updater handle pathnames? As far as I know Ubuntu and Windows use slightly different pathname conventions.

Have you tried setting the CWD (Current Working Directory) to the EQ2 directory and run the launcher from there?

Reference about pathnames:

It works for me using the most current Ubuntu Live CD. I'll have to try it with an installation, but I am not in the country for some days. I'll check it on sunday latest...

Yeah, same for me, double clicking or manual entry didn't work, but I only spent a minute on it. If I have a moment before you do I'll check into it also.

Installed the most current Ubuntu now. Works fine for me.
Tried it on my netbooks' eeebuntu. Works fine for me :P

Once again, make sure you use Sun's Java VM and not OpenJDK or something. And make sure you doubleclick the folder icon, not just the line where it is in.

I changed the way the filechooser is working. This will throw an exception (this is a known bug in Java6), but it should not be visible if you don't start it at command line.
