picking a server

Dear People,
Is there any intelligent way to choose a server? I mean, is there anything important that one should know about the different servers? For example, the Antonia Bayle server is RP preferred. What does Role-Playing preferred mean? Also, I heard that the RP Union will pick a server, who are they and why would someone want to play on that server? Are Interface members playing on a specific server?
