Legal issues with porting UI's

I was thinking about porting some interfaces over from other games.

my question is: Is this legal? I dont want somebody banging down my door cuz i used their images in my mod not like im selling it or anything....heh.

Also using imagery in general. If i want to have a gargoyal, i sure as hell arent going to draw it myself...what if i ask the user and recieve no response? Could be a dead email adress as a contact or something.

I haven't seen any computer games released in the last 10 years that didn't include the rubber-stamp "no, unless we give explicit permission" copyright.

I don't know what qualifies as "Fair Use". When I was doing Morrowind mods, the Bethesda company guys basically said that "inspired by" or "best imitation" of was always okay, but anything using any of their files would be removed immediately. I believe the same general guidelines apply here.

Basically as long as you do not use their files you are good to go. "Creative recreation"

Your impression on how it looks... besides, they should be proud someone is trying to port the way their UI is to anothers game :P
