EQ2 Character Settings File
|
|
If your bags keep moving, and you want them to stay put...
If you have more than one chat window, but only the first one shows up...
If you have other hinky things happening with your UI that just aren't explained by having a mod loaded...
If You try everything you and the Mod writers here know and your interface still messes up evey time you log out and log back in...
You may be a victim of the "Sony Corrupting the Character Settings File" bug.
This is a file that fixes a persistent defect in SOE's code.
It was originally contributed by "Binton" back in March, but has been referenced so many times, that it needs a permanent home, to draw comments - and for reference when someone comes to an interface forum with problems that come from the bug (and not from the mods).
Here are some cautions:
It's designed for 1280x1024 resolution, but if you use a different resolution, you should be able to adapt fairly well.
The layout may not be one you like - you will probably have to redo all your window positions.
Be sure to back up your original first: rename it to somehting like "OLD.charname...." and copy this file into the main EQ directory and rename it to whatever your original charname file was.
27 JUN:
Note that re-corruption seems to be an issue since update 10. Especially losing font defaults. Using this file may help. It worked for me, but some others say it did not work for them for more than 1 session.
In that case you may need to use this file to get your UI set up, then alt-tab out of the EQ2 client, and copy the ini file to your desktop in order to save it. The only problemis that every time you enter the game (until SOE fixes this bug) , you will have to copy that file from your desktop to your eq2directory to get a non-messed-up layout for yout UI.
Anyone knowing a better way, please post it here. Otherwise I may just write a small utility to do this (copy the file then launch eq2 or the eq2 map updater which can then launch the eq2 client for you)

Thanks, very good tip. And I'd hate to see someone trying to go thru all these windows individually clicking on them etc. Although I eventually did to get the opacity, etc where I wanted it -- but thats jsut me being picky

Just wanted to add something onto Chumba's message at the top. You don't have to right click ever UI window to unlock them...in fact some windows such as the options window itself has no "window options" available for changing opacity and locking/unlocking. What you do is open up the options menu, click on "User Interface" then click on "Game Windows". Under this tab you'll see the buttons "Reset", "Unlock", and "Lock". These buttons reset, unlock and lock every single window in the game. Just unlock all when you want to move stuff around, then lock them all in place when you're done.

Finally got an email from SOE - they are aware of this bug, but its not a "showstopper" (since you can regenerate by deleting you char.ini file, or DL the one here).
So we may be stuck for a while.

I knew it wasn't something I did that was screwing me up! You wouldn't believe the hell I've been thought with people bashing and flaming at me because I'm reporting a bug with a mod that everyone else thinks is the best thing since...well...the best thing ever. You may be amongst the few decent people alive.

Thanks for posting this file it worked wonderfully, and made a differnce in the enjoyment of the game... No longer do I have to worry about crashing, or just camping out leasurely knowing that my windows and settings will finally stay put.
This is one of the simplest things to have been uploaded, but with SoE's lack of support regarding non saving UI's it is very helpful, and much needed. Thanks for having posting this file.

And here's another tip:
Once you get you bank, bags, and complete UI set the way you want them, log out. Then log back in to make sure they work.
Then log out again, and copy the [servername]_[charname]_settings.ini file to something like FIXED.charname.ini
Then the next time SOE screws up your file, you just copy your FIXED file over top of the corrupted one, and you are back to where you want to be.

Please post up any other problems this file solves.
And remember - the FIRST thing you have to do ius UNLOCK ever single window. Every one of them. Right-click, get window-settings, and then click on the check-marked "Locked" check box at the bottom left of the setting windows. This can be a challenge for transient windows, like your casting bar or zoning messages.
For the casting bar, here's an easy way to get at it: Cast Coll of the Overlord/Qeynos - and while its spooling up, get the settings, unlock the window and move it. If you get close to running out of time, simply move, which will cancel the Call... spel.
For the message window, its abit tricky - one good way to move it is to do some harvesting - that gets the bar and reward window up to whre you can unlock it, then later move it.
And do not forget to move your "Breath" window - or you could get a rude surprise when swimming to the island to visit the Fence.
