Default Java Error when Launching Updater

I've tried loading and launching ProfitUI Updater several times over the last few months. The Updater has never worked for me. I checked the other posts for Java Errors, but did not see anything exactly the same, but tried some of the solutions anyway. Keep getting this error:

java.lang.NullPointerException

I've tried re-installing Java, re-downloading the Updater, launching from the desktop, launching from the command line (javaws C:\launch.pnlp), launching from the website (http://updater.pala.de), turning off my anti-virus protection, checking my firewall, and of course, restarting my computer for every different action. I re-installed Java 4 times. I have Windows XP, so doesn't seem to be any connection with the Vista problems. I have to re-install Profit UI from scratch every time SOE does a major update, and it's a pain. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I have a friend with the exact same problem, and her and I went through the exact same process in attempts to install. Now she does not have ProfitUI installed. For the exact reason you say in your post (the frustration after updates). I wouldn't mind some suggestions in order to give this friend of mine a hand?

EDIT: I FIXED IT!

open java settings, go to java, go to "java runtime environment settings" -> show

on my system i have 3 users and 3 productversions. the fresh updated 1.6.0_17 and _07 and _03.

i deactivated 17 and 7 and only checked version 03 (the OLD version i read about and why i said, its a version issue!)

click ok. start profit updater. allow download, install. voila: works.

----------------------------(and sorry for my bad english )

hm, ok. i just read it somewhere.

"JAR-Ressourcen in JNLP-Datei sind nicht von dem selben Zertifikat signiert."

jar ressources in the jnlp-file are not sigend by the same certificate.

whatever this means, im a javanoob and i checked all certificatesettings i could find, but nothing helped.

from the profit script:
<j2se href="http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se" version="1.6.0_05+"/>

im using 1.6.0_17-b04 right now.

rest from the errormsg:

ok, i have to admit, i trusted the "version too high" variant. but it seems like its a certificate issue. problem occurred after java update. and all i can find in the java setting is to import certificates. and all i can find at the profithomepage is a fingerprint.

any ideas?

I know that Thawte revoked all their free certificates on 16 November 2009 to get people to pay. Kaldran was using one of those to sign the updater files. He expected Java to not check for revocation information. Maybe the newest version does now? Just an idea, I don't even have the updater installed anymore so I can't confirm.

If it does not work, you likely installed it incorrectly. Always try a clean install before reporting bugs.

Moving the data to another machine.
I bring on the services one after another (currently watching the mailservers), so web services will be back in a few hours. Depends on how fast DNS propagates though.

Just kill all javaw.exe processes (or reboot). Obviously it does not cleanly shut down on a missing network connection and keeps the database open.

Takes some more time now. You should always doublecheck in which folder you are before issueing dangerous commands. At least the backup is only 10h old.

Webservers are running once again (and another backup is too ). Still looks like DNS settings have not propagated throughout the Internet yet. Give it some more hours before complaining.
If you modified your hosts file at some point in the past to make the updater work, now is the best time to remove that modification again.

So what needs to be done to fix this? My updater is working fine, but my fiance's continues to get errors and will not save settings. Clicking to reset all settings doesn't do anything either. He has already uninstalled and reinstalled it as well, still no go.

maybe this will help others. I run vista 64, I am quite sure I had the short cut to the updater checked to run as administrator. Seems somehow it got unchecked, so rechecking and i was allowed to enter the file paths and all now works.

My wife and I are getting this error message on our 2 computers as well. Strange part is that our 3rd box isn't suffering from the same problem. Does this issue have anything to do with updating to the latest version of Java?

I ran a search about this error and seems its not just java related it also happens in c/c++ etc.

Theres a recommnedation that if you run AVG to turn off resident shield and also about moving the location of the files by copying them to a new folder. I would recommend deleting all references to your userdata folder and reinstalling the updater as the only time I had an issue like that it was posted to clear the cache and the old install folder then reinstall.

Anyone got an idea why the javaw.exe processes are making the Updater vomit all over our screens?

I am going to assume you totally missed what has been posted above on how to fix it.

1> Follow Kaldrans instructions about rebooting.
2> Delete the updater and the files in your Appdata folder relating to it
3> Shut down AVG if you use it and any other resident shields from other security programs. These can really wreck havoc with libraries compliled or executed via scripts.

From the looks of where the error is I would say you need to delete all the files in

C:\Users\Robert\AppData\Roaming\ProfitUI Reborn Updater\ since thats where your 1st exception is thrown.

The uninstall the updater and reinstall.

javaw.exe is just the normal java webstart application.
If the updater crashes - e.g. because of a missing network connection or something - it may happen that there is no application window anymore but the updater keeps running in the background. If you now start the updater a second time, it cannot open the database (because it is still opened by the first crashed process) and it throws that exception about it. Solution is to kill the process locking the database by killing it or rebooting.
Actually it should shut down cleanly on every exception. I'll have to look why it does not when I have some spare time.
