Default dds questions and a screenshoot woo!

Ok my first question about DDS in general - I've noticed the backgrounds are not a solid color, so how does this come out as transparent?

Second question, I've created a new dds file to use for a new tab style, I wanted something to match the single_pixel window frame. I started making the file 256x256 and then tried 64x256, and no matter what I do it gets stretched out and looks like attached:

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I've tried saving with and without mips as well.

I believe the transparent part comes from layering. This can be done with programs like Gimp (FREEWARE) or Photoshop.

The stretching appears to be a graphic editor not rendering your stretch/skew properly. For that, I would InfranView to adjust sizes of my finsih grpahic or use the Gimp/Photoshop.

Others I am sure will be answer this thread in a more thorough approach.

Nope, DDS images don't have to be square, the dimensions just have to be powers of two. So 128x64 is okay, 120x60 is not, nor is 120x120. It just looks (at least to me) like whoever wrote the UIBuilder simply assumed that the DDSes would be square.

Just trying to help, I really have no idea, but I rememberes seeing this post on powers of 2, so 256x256 may be the problem?

If I'm wrong, just ignore me =)

Transparency values are saved in the Alpha Channel. In Photoshop, you can choose between channels (R, G, B and Alpha). Transparency is per-pixel and ranges from 0% transparent (fully visible, represented by white on the alpha layer) to 100% transparent (fully transparent, represented by black on the alpha layer) and every whole number in between (represented by various shades of gray).

Default still skewed

I am using photoshop with the nvidia plugin to create and save the DDS. I've tried making the image square, the screenshot is from a 256x256 square with my image in the top portion.

Here's my dds file, can someone look at it and/or suggest what settings I should be using to save my DDS files? I've tried several formats with and without mips, always turns out like this.

Default square yes no?

Well I dont know what the official line is, but making it 512 by 512 worked. 256 by 256 did not. Thanks all.
