The first advice I give anyone running Vista or Win7 is "Don't install into the default location. Make a folder like C:\Games and install EQ2 under that. Put the EQ2Map updater under there too. It's a bit more hassle up front, but it'll save you a couple of jumbo bottles of Advil later on.".
I've found the way Vista and Win7 handle protection of the system directories works wonderfully for software that's updated through standard Windows installer programs or the Windows Update system, but it just doesn't at all handle programs that update and patch themselves.
