26-32 is what I normally use depending on the resolution, but I did notice a while back that it was better to set the hotbar icon size before you install the UI because afterwards the background tends to "snap" back to a smaller size leaving a few gaps in the skin so to speak, after much messing with the code I couldn't find a fool proof way to prevent this
