The browser windows fail on my sometimes but it doesn't interfere with the patcher in anyway. I just get an error message in the browser windows themselves.
A couple things to try would be to do a scandisk and defragment the hard drive. If they are actually seeing any file names start to download before it crashes they could try deleting those files and letting the patcher reinstall them. They should also probably go to download options and do a complete file check or maybe try disabling any of the optional choices and see if anything else happens.
If all that fails I'd try a tech support chat session or a complete reinstall.
