In notepad, this will show up as a small square between ?> and <Page
If you change this to any other white space (a space, a CR NL pair) the entire UI breaks and the game becomes unusable.
Sony devs, please fix the parser for this file to accept standard XML.

This was posted in the User Interface section of the Everquest II Official forums.
After I used the Notepad and looked at the Default - eq2ui_mainhud.xml and compared to my custom ui - eq2ui_mainhud.xml I could see the difference. You can see a box in place of a space as described.
I copied the first 2 lines from default and replaced that in custom ui file using Notepad. I logged into game and everything worked as usual.
