Yes, the orignial "MiniMap" was an external window with no POIs or pointer. You're correct in saying that external window is now mostly obsolete, though its still handy for various map devlopment related stuff or if you just want to see the map with nothing at all on top of it. It does also allow you to bring up a second map image even if you ditched the main Fetish Map
