There is no way for us to know what step of the quest you are on. That data is not provided to us. There is no way for us to traverse the quest tree, there is no way for us to know what quest your working on. This would only be possible on SOE's side.

Yes we can add a image of a book and say this is part #3 of quest run-here-and-back-ten-times, and we can even make a image behind it flash when you click on it or clicking on something linked to it. However we can't tell when your on step 3, or even if you are on that quest. The complexity of code need to do that is beyond what the UI can do it isn't even funny.

NO really we can't do it; what most people don't understand is that EQ2's UI does not have a scripting language. What it does have is a very basic spreadsheet language if can even call it that where we can assign values and make conditional comparisons. Plus most of the quest window info is hardcoded and beyond our ability to access.
