Sounds like an issue with your window placements file.
1.) right click the window and choose window settings then click reset placement and opacity
2.) redo your window placements file if the first one doesn't work. (Be sure to back it up first though)
Note: the black background is only supposed to cover the chat area (for example, i didn't set it to be behind the chat tabs)
