I do know that I have had "hidden/invisible" windows that may appear if something doesn't turn right in the UI. This could be the problem. However, I doubt it because if it's only the UI that was affected, I would like to know if he uses his mouse to look around or if when he was having the issues he wasn't using his mouse to look. Because, if he doesn't use his mouse, he could have had a big box over the UI that was causing the problems.
However, if this is not the problem, then the only thing that I can think of is related to a lag issue. Do you know if his computer is relatively old? Is this his first UI? Maybe his computer isn't fast enough to use UIs and only the default will work because of the extra resources it may use to draw the colors and windows out. I don't know. I'm just putting out my thoughts and hoping maybe it will help someone out sooner or later.
