Thanks, but actually no. Found the problem, its a bug in the updater installation.
Turns out, if you have an eq2.ini which is only there to turn on anti-aliasing in the graphics, and contains no custom ui spec, the installer gets confused. I deleted my existing eq2.ini, tried the install again, and all is fine now.
And... THIS THING ROCKS!!!!! Awesome achievement.
