yes the artifacts are indeed quest starters
some items ( you'll see some book type things .. grey in colour ) that will start a quest .. to kill so many critters in a 5 minute or a 2 minute time limit..
the trick to this is to go to a newbie zone and kill the deer or snakes or what ever there ... they will fulfill the quest requirements
