Rescaling SOE maps?

Is there any interest/possibility in doing some cropping of the SOE maps? Butcherblock in particular has some terribly wasted space. Even though the unfogged map technically fills out the window, much of it is unreachable and I think it would be beneficial to better make out some of the land features.

Sinking Sands could also use some improvement in this respect, but it's not as bad. Is it feasible to crop and rescale an existing map file like that, or would it need to be re-done from scratch?

Wasted Space and hard to read

I have to agree with Wapce the Butchblock map would seriously benefit from being enlarged to fill the map window, would make it much easier to read, follow, and locate mobs with it at that point.

I agree, the hardest part might be to get a working zonerect for the re-scaled map.

Well, if we use a certain scale factor on the current map.. IE pick a center point and scale a certain bit of it up, you'll scale it up with a certain ratio. Say the old/new ratio is .75 (for every 3 pixels of the old you now have 4 in the new). The zonerect could theoretically be scaled the same way.

OK, say the current map is 400px by 500px (I'm using easy numbers). Now lets say in our "zoomed in" map we take an area 300px by 325px to blow up (maintaining aspect ratio for easiness). The new map represents .75 of the old map, so we take each of the zonerect numbers and multiply by .75.

If the old went from -100 to +400 in the E-W, the new would be -75 to +300.

Of course, that would only work if the center of the map is maintained.

I think. It's been a long day, so my math could be horribly off heh.

Thanks for the info guys, good stuff.

Problem is that BB does fill the width of the map. If you scale it up any to better fill out the height, you'll crop stuff on the sides.

Rather than messing with the current map, you might want to make sub maps that zoom the heavy trafic areas. Here are east and west maps I whipped up that use a 1.75 scale.

Correct, cropping is what I'm suggesting. Even though the map is relatively large, half of it isn't reachable. I would think a map that looks like this (which still shows all the reachable portions of the zone) would be a lot more useful for navigating.

BBM is one of a few zones like this, I think. Anyway, just my $0.02.
