Updater will not start

Pasting this thread here in hopes of some help.

This just began happening recently. Had EQ2 map with auto updater for a while now. But when I run it now I get the following error:

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.

Process id=0x95c (2396), Thread id=0x7c0 (1984)

Click OK to terminate the application. Click CANCEL to debug the application.

If I hit CANCEL I get:

Registered JIT debugger is not available. An attempt to launch a JIT debugger with the following command resulted in an error code of 0x2 (2). Please check computer settings.

cordbg.exe !a 0xadc

Click on retry to have the process wait while attatching a debugger manually. Click on Cancel to abort the JIT debug reqest.

Ok....so all of that is gibberish to me. What do I do?

Anyone come up with a fix for this yet? Does re-installing eq2map fix it?

Yes Fourteen, that is the exact error I get and it just started a few days ago.

Things I have tried so far from searching:

Reinstalling .NET
Reinstalling EQ2MAP

Neither fixed the problem.....

Please help us EQ2MAP devs, has something chagned in the program or in windows update that would cause this?

Best you can do is make sure your running the version of .NET recomended in the download notes and try re-installing eq2map. The person who made the patcher (taco-man) no longer plays EQ2 and I'm not a .NET programer.

If any one is a .NET or better yet a C programer that wants to make a new patcher or updated one with better error reporting and such that would be awesome.

There is a manual version you can download and install...

Ruddles 03-27-2006 01:24 PM

That does basically mean you either have a corrupt .NET install, or not installed at all. You need .NET1.1 for EQ2MAP at the moment.

Haggian 03-29-2006 11:06 AM

I have completey uninstalled all .NET products and reinstalled them via windows update. Still have the same problem. Any other thoughts?

This is a brand new Dell E-1705 Core Duo with tons of memory etc. It did work then suddenly started giving me this error a few weeks back.

Ruddles 03-29-2006 12:16 PM

Do any other .NET applications do the same thing, or is it just EQ2MAP?

Can you go to "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework" tell me the FOLDER names in there (not the files). They will be something like v1.0.3705 etc.

I don't know what other programs I have that utilize .NET but this is the only one (EQ2map) that now gets this error. I am faithful about always keeping all software up to date including windows etc.

The folders in my .NET framework file are:

v1.0.3705
v1.1.4322
v2.0.50727

Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You said it was working up until here recently? If so what did you install, uninstall or change on your computer before this started happening? Did windows auto-update something?

I see you are up to 2.0 for .Net maybe try just installing 1.1. Thats what I have and mine works ok. I try to stay away from .net programs so eq2map is the only one I have that uses it and thats only for the dev site, so I never went to the trouble to update to 2.0.

Ruddles 03-30-2006 12:35 PM

All seems ok with the folder. I'll knock together a silly console app in C# tonight and you can try that and see if it works.

Having 2.0 installed shouldn't cause any issues, they can sit side-by-side quite happily. I have them both installed here and it works fine.

Thats great, just let me know when you have something for me to try :)

Sorry, went to the gym last night instead and fell asleep when i got back.

Anyways, try running the attached exe (unzip it). It's just a silly form but we can at least see if .NET 1.1 is working.

Haggian 03-31-2006 11:12 PM

Lol, kk random app works hehe was funny....now how do we get eq2map to update?

Ruddles 04-01-2006 04:41 AM

We know .NET 1.1 works then so it looks like the app is either:

Throwing a non-clr exception which is something i've never seen before in a .NET app. It's also a complete arse to figure out why and where.

Or

Throwing an exception before the app fully starts and therfore the app isn't getting to the error handling section.

If we can catch the exception then we are more likely to figure out what is wrong, and be able to fix it before 1.7 is released. I'll look into moving the code around to try and catch this and get back to you.

Haggian 04-01-2006 09:44 AM

Great Ruddles,

Again your work is greatly appreciated :)

If it helps any I get this error the second I start the updater, the updater GUI doesnt come up at all....

Haggian 04-06-2006 10:31 PM

You forget about me Ruddles? Just antsy for fix hehe

Ruddles 04-07-2006 11:39 AM

Apologies, been busy this week with work. Still, not excuse, i said i would help so i will. I'll have a look tonight and see if I can figure something out. Watch this space.

OK, try overwriting your current EQ2Map_Updater.exe (wherever you installed it) with the one in this zip file, and then try running it. Hopefully we will get a more meaningful message.

Haggian 04-08-2006 11:13 AM

Ok I installed your program over the default and when I open it I get an error popup that says :

Error opening EQ2MAP: The root element is missing.

Ruddles 04-09-2006 08:00 AM

Ooohhh, XML error then. Can you either attach your config file to a post or PM it to me please. The file is eq2map_config.cfg

Please find the requested file attached.

OK, anyone else seeing an empty file?

Try overwriting it with the one attached here. Note: This is the config for my PC, so if EQ2Map updater starts then you will probably have to go into the options and change things to match your PC.

Haggian 04-09-2006 11:37 AM

OMG OMG OMG OMG

RUDDLES!!!!

That fixed it!!!

What's weoird is I have re-installed eq2map in attempt to fix this too, but I guess a new install doesnt repair the config file you sent.

OMG I am so happy thanks so much, if there is anything I can ever help you with please let me know!!!

Ruddles 04-09-2006 11:42 AM

Lol.

Glad you got it sorted. I know what the issue is with this, i'll make sure it doesn't happen in version 2.

Haggian 04-10-2006 11:09 AM

Sounds good! Thanks again!

tojejedno 05-17-2006 12:33 PM

Hey hey,
I went through this troubleshoting, downloaded this "talkative" exe and got "Error setting up EQ2MAP: Font Arial black doesnt support style Regular".
BTW its mine fresh installation, and I have no eq2map_config.cfg.
If I use the one in this topic I get the same error.

Ruddles 05-17-2006 03:34 PM

Wow, that's a really random one. I'll have to have a look at where Arial is used and see if I can change it for you.
