The Microsoft DirectDraw Surface (.dds) is part of DirectX 9. You can read more about the format it self at msdn.

You can find the Nvidia photoshop and other plugin info HERE

Attached is another photoshop plugin if you are having trouble reading the alpha channel.

Using GIMP to open map files

There is a DDS plugin for GIMP. This can be downloaded from Google Code. This will allow you to load and save images in the Direct Draw Surface (DDS) format. Enjoy! :nana:
