Instal Issues...And they hurt my eyes

I just got a new computer so im downloading all the things I had on my old one, (clearly eq2 maps was on the re-instal list), but im having some odd issues. I clicked the big ol red download button and it saved:

EQ2MAP-Updater-1.0.17-Setup

it has a internet explorer symbol (which I thought was very odd) and when I clicked it about 100 internet pages opened up, closed, and reopened within moments...this spectical created blinding flashes of white light...suggestions?

Landiin 07-01-2008 10:39 AM

Don't go into the light!.. Other then that no idea. Turn off all Download accelerators if used and try again.

Poodleguy32 07-01-2008 06:49 PM

I have no idea what a Download accelerator is, but just so we're clear:

1) I thought it was very strange the download had an internet explorer icon (is that normal?)

2) Is there a designated place that I was supposed to save the initial download that im unaware of? I saved it on my desktop if that makes any difference

gm9 07-02-2008 01:43 AM

The download has no IE icon and does not open hundreds of pages, you should probably run some adware/virus removal tool.

Poodleguy32 07-02-2008 03:04 AM

check.

(its a new comp...id be pissed if I got a virus from spending 20 seconds on the homepage of this site =d)

gm9 07-02-2008 03:47 AM

Fact remains that the download is a .zip file. ;)

Poodleguy32 07-02-2008 03:52 AM

sorry about the blatent tech ignorance here but...whats a .zip file and how does it tie into this problem?

gm9 07-02-2008 04:06 AM

see www.google.com for all your questions

and we try to tell you that the problem is with the software on your end, not with the file on this site.

Narzoo 07-02-2008 04:22 AM

Yeah, the download is a .zip file which is just a compressed folder. It does not have the ability to do what you say. If it's brand new Windows, it should look like a folder with a zipper up it.

This means you have somehow downloaded something else. Very odd on a new computer.

As already suggested, I would get "Adaware" and "Spybot: search and destroy" and run one after the other. They are free online. That should get rid of most things. And run your virus scanner too. Most new computers come with one.

Let us know if you still have problems :)

Landiin 07-02-2008 08:03 AM

You are trying to download from this page? With this link?

Poodleguy32 07-02-2008 03:14 PM

Ok:

1) I ran the virus scanner...found no problems
2) im positive I downloaded the right link...the big red button with the word "download"

So, if everyone here is stumped then it probably is something on my end (although I wasnt suggesting the link was broken or anything along those lines in the first place :p )

so ill try to explain everything that happens in more detail...maybe that will provide some clues:

-Im on the main page and I click the download big ass red button
-Saving the folder to my desktop
-Download complete - I close the popup
-Double Click the newly saved file
[Eyes Owned]

However, one thing id like to make very clear because im positive it was not the same as when I downloaded it a good year ago:

-After I save the file to the desktop the picture itself is again a internet explorer logo...its possible to change the program to open it with (Right Click -Option: Open with...) and the choices range from itunes to windows movie maker
-is there something special I need to set on Vista? my old computer was XP and had no problems

Thanks for all the help peeps :D

Narzoo 07-02-2008 04:48 PM

A fresh install of Vista comes with it's own zip program. As I said, it should look like a folder with a big zipper over it.

From the sounds of it (The 'open with' showing movie maker and itunes) the file you are double clicking on on your desktop is not the downloaded zip file you want.

Delete this broken file and try downloading it again.

When you save it, try giving it another name like "myui.zip" and see what happens.

Poodleguy32 07-02-2008 06:01 PM

No luck =( its still the same icon...not a folder with a zipper on it

Zutier 07-02-2008 06:16 PM

Make sure you are saving the file its self, not a link to the file. Thats the only thing i can think of that would cause an IE icon instead of the Zipped folder. also. Firefox > IE

Drumstix42 07-02-2008 08:33 PM

I forget in Vista, but in any folder, you should be able to go to Options and in the Folders tab make sure file extensions are shown. This way you'll be able to see if the file you are saving is a .zip file.

How would I know if I saved the file or the link? I just hit the big download button and saved the popup =d

Narzoo 07-02-2008 09:40 PM

ok...open up any folder in Vista and click on the "Tools" menu

Then click on the "Folder Options" option.

In the new window, click on the "View" tab.

Scroll down in the advanced options bit until you find "Hide extensions of known file types*

Unckeck that box and click ok.

Now look at the file you downloaded. Does it still say myui.zip or does it now say myui.zip.url or something else?

jnils 07-03-2008 01:35 AM

Can you post the file size and name of the downloaded file please?

Poodleguy32 07-03-2008 03:43 PM

ok so the file is now called:

EQ2MAP-Updater-1.0.17-Setup.zip
879k <-- is that the file size you wanted?

but still the same problems as before...its not a folder...its still asking me what program I want to open it with

jnils 07-03-2008 03:55 PM

The name and file size is right :)
Its windows that by some reason don't recognice it as a zip file. :(

You can always download and install WinZip that will solve your problem :)

Is there a version of winzip thats free that will resolve the problems?

When I was messin with a few options trying to figure out the problem I got a popup offering winzip for 20 or 40 bucks...is the free version all I need?

Drumstix42 07-03-2008 06:09 PM

Yes, free version is all you need.

Landiin 07-03-2008 09:05 PM

Right click on the icon, then click on open with.

When the window pops up with a list of programs, select windows explorer. If windows explorer isn't listed, the click on the brows button and go to x:\windows\ and selected explorer.exe. Then you should be able to open and view all zips like they where a directory.

Or

Down load one of the many many free zip gui's out there to do it. I prefer just letting windows do it or I sometimes use 7-zip.

Poodleguy32 07-04-2008 06:18 PM

ok so im still having issues on the final setup:

I got winzip which solved my original problem, but now that I have the correct setup folder I ran it and the eq2map auto updater appeared, great, so I downloaded the files to a folder on my desktop, but it wont work in-game. what did I miss?

jnils 07-05-2008 03:12 AM

You can't download any files to desktop, they need to be in you EQ2 folder.
Make sure all the path in Options are set to the right ones :)

Poodleguy32 07-05-2008 05:58 AM

I right clicked the eq2II icon and hit "open file location" and put all the files that downloaded in there with no results. should I reinstal everything (including the eq2 maps setup) in that folder, or is there another way to get this program running?

gm9 07-05-2008 06:08 AM

If you have downloaded EQ2MAP-Updater-1.0.17-Setup.zip, store it anywhere you want and run EQ2MAP-Updater-1.0.17-Setup.exe, which you find inside that archive. The rest should be self explanatory. If your system does not recognize the .zip file type, download 7zip, WinZIP, WinRAR or a similar tool.

Poodleguy32 07-05-2008 05:39 PM

Ok, I got the setup working and I got the nice, fimilar EQ2Map Updater icon on the desktop :D

However, When I run the EQ2Map updater it pulls up a screen entitled "Choose your everquest2.exe file" ...I didnt realy know what that mean so I went to my everquest folder and tried saving it in the UI folder, but for some reason theres no way to save it that I could find...anywhere...
At the bottom of the screen it has a text box (empty) entitled "file name" and to the right of that text box it says "Everquest.exe"...it seems like im supposed to save it over an existing file because there was no way to just put it down in the UI folder...my options where "open" and "cancel"...putting in C:\Program Files\Sony\Everquest II\UI did nothing (although thats a pathway from pure memory...it might be wrong).

What do I do? :o

It's not asking you to save anything... it's asking you for the location of Everquest2.exe so that after you're finished updating the map it can open the patcher for you. Just navigate to where Everquest2.exe is inside of your EQ2 installation (ie, like C:/Program Files/Sony/EverQuest 2/ is the directory it should be in). Once you tell it where that existing file is, it automatically discovers the UI folder and adds EQ2MAP to your current UI.
