HEROIC OPPORTUNITY NOTES

========================================

If you're part of a group that's not taking advantage of heroic opportunities, you're functioning at significantly less than your full potential. If you're soloing without taking advantage of heroic opportunities, you're an idiot. It's that simple. :)

GENERAL INFO:

Heroic opportunites (HOs) are two-step processes. First, group members participate in a "starter chain" by casting spells or using abilities with icons as indicated on the HO wheel. Once completed, the starter chain triggers the actual HO, which is completed in the same way.

The class which begins the starter chain determines which classes can continue it; similarly, the classes which participate in the chain determine which heroic opportunities might appear. For example, if a fighter begins a starter chain, any class may continue it; however, if a priest begins one, only a priest or a scout may continue it. Similarly, if a mage completes a two-class starter chain begun by a fighter, the HO most likely to appear will be "Scholar's Insight," but if a scout completes it, the HO most likely to appear will be "Luck's Bite."

The possible starter chain sequences are as follows:

    Fighter -> Fighter (1-class HO)
    Fighter -> Mage (2-class HO)
    Fighter -> Priest (2-class HO)
    Fighter -> Priest -> Mage (3-class HO)
    Fighter -> Scout (2-class HO)

    Mage -> Mage (1-class HO)
    Mage -> Priest (2-class HO)
    Mage -> Scout (2-class HO)

    Priest -> Priest (1-class HO)
    Priest -> Scout (2-class HO)

    Scout -> Fighter -> Mage (3-class HO)
    Scout -> Fighter -> Priest (3-class HO)
    Scout -> Fighter -> Priest -> Mage (4-class HO)
    Scout -> Priest -> Mage (3-class HO)
    Scout -> Scout (1-class HO)

It is important to note that the only four-class HO and all but one of the three-class HOs are started by scouts. So if you have a scout in your party, you should probably let him begin the HO starter chains; if you don't have a scout, you should let your fighter do it.

Once a starter chain is completed and an HO appears, a scout (and only a scout) has the option to "flip" it to another (randomly-determined) HO in the same set. This can be handy if you want a specific HO, but another one in the set is triggered instead.
