Unhappy Critical Error

Ok when i use to play it only happened once or twice a month and it was only in game, mostly in QH. now this happens sometimes when loading up game and it is doing this 5+ times a night. here is what happens: I start to lag, then my screen freezes and goes out of full screen mode and a message pops up that says critical error: Application ran out of memory when trying to load (ex) 1,100,110 mb of memory. can someone plz help me. thank you

Turn down your graphic settings, thats the only solution I know of right now.

There's an issue within the game where in it won't allocate more than 1 GB even if you have more to allocate, and so when it hits that cap (from loading graphics, generally) boom you're booted. Even on my expensive PC I can only run at "High" -- Maximum would always hit the cap, even with 1G of VRAM and a (here irrelevant) total of 4G RAM.

There were recent posts on the dev tracker in a huge thread which might have more information, but which I did not read since I never had crash issues:

This extra memory was not taken into account and the low-memory countermeasures were not turned on when they should have been.

However, there is a way for you to manually turn on the countermeasures. You can do this by adding the following line to your eq2.ini file in the same directory as eq2.exe:

/force_low_mem_mode true

Alternatively, you can do this while playing the game (but you'll have to do it every time):

/force_low_mem_mode true

There is a known issue where low memory mode might cause geometry to be invisible until you get very close to it, and we have a fix internally that we're testing.

We plan to test the fixes further and hopefully release them in a hotfix next week.

Hopefully this makes the client behave much better about memory usage. Let me know if it works for you!
On Vista you also need to a install a patch but the game should warn you about that if you haven't.

If it does not work, you likely installed it incorrectly. Always try a clean install before reporting bugs.
