I had that problem too after the patches. I had a look in my custom ui folder at the eq2ui.xml file.
There was a line:
<include>eq2ui_newcharscene.xml</include>
However, the default one had changed (after the last main update) to:
<include>eq2ui_newcharscene2.xml</include>
So I updated my custom one accordingly and then my char was not facing backwards and all was well (I could delete/create/select chars again).
