We NEED a mapping tutorial

I know we have tony's but its a little outdated and hard to read. We need a good one. Simple and easy to understand, but with enough information to make a map alone. It should be in html format almost ready for the website. I will do editing on it if needed.

I'd like for someone with some m4d m4pp|ng skillz to work this out so they can tell all the little quirks of it. Thanks guys

Ssssss

The Short and Super Simple Sunthas Surveying System (SSSSSS)
  1. Pick A Zone
  2. Make a Loc Button - A Macro you can press quickly to get a lot of /loc commands
  3. Turn on Logging with /log
  4. Run around the edge of the zone hitting your newly made loc button
  5. Exit the game
  6. Run the Log file through Tony's Tool -- LINK -- Tony's tool is not user friendly but its quick and easy. What it does is listed on the URL.
  7. Open the output file from Tony's Tool in MS Excel
  8. Convert Text to Columns using % (This is standard command in the Data menu in Excel. This will give you 3 columns of data instead of one column.)
  9. Create Scatter Graph Chart on Column A and C (Using the Insert Menu select Chart choose -XY Scatter- hit Next. Highlight the X and Y columns -should be A and C- Hit Finished.)
  10. Reverse order on both axis to match the game. (Right click on the Axis in the chart, Select Format Axis - Click on Scale Tab - Check Mark 'Values in Reverse Order' - click ok -- Repeat this for the other axis.)
  11. Cut and paste chart into Adobe Photoshop
  12. Create new layer and trace the scattergraph to create the map
  13. Save file and post it in this forum.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...super simple huh? I dont even get that, and I thought I understood pretty well how to do it! All the excel convert this to this with this and create this and that then put this over there and jump up and down in frustration because you have no freaking clue what this is trying to say...

hehe, anyways, yea thats a nice shortie, but we need something an idiot can learn from.

I had hoped to make time to do a tutorial myself, since I started learning how to make a new map not too long ago, but I won't be able to even start until April sometime.

I am deploying for the rest of March, and I will be completely without computer access. :(

But, if a need still exists when I get back, I'll definately submit a tutorial for you guys to approve :)

the SSSSSS method is pretty easy to understand. But uh, can't you just make an excel macro?

run it through tony's tool, run it through the excel macro, paste it in photoshop. easy.

Not everyone has excel though.. i'm looking into whether something free like openoffice will work instead..

you guys should really check out mappie. here is its website. I used it to make the map for stormhold (well, i didnt make the stormhold map image but i sent the drawing it made to someone else that made the actual map image) but still it works great. you can set what it looks for when you are starting a new line, so when you are in game you could just have a macro like "/em starts a new line" and then when you import it you tell it what to look for when you start a new line and you just type "starts a new line" and then it knows to start a new line every time it sees "starts a new line" in your log file. Just make sure you set the grid display type to y z or it wont look like a zone and it will just look like scribbles.
