Description
The MakeWindowFullscreen utility resizes the EQ2 window so that it fits the entire screen without a frame. Since the game is still actually running in windowed mode, you can switch to other windows quickly and the game will still be full-screen.

I created the MakeWindowFullscreen utility after buying a new laptop with a 1366 x 768 resolution screen. I wasn't used to such a short screen, and the window frame which had always been a slight nuisance became much more glaring. This utility gives me the satisfaction of using as much of the screen as possible, while also removing the possibility of accidentally dragging the window or resizing it.

The screenshots demonstrate how a screen looks normally with a maximized window, then how it looks after using the MakeWindowFullscreen utility, and finally how it looks with a browser window on top.

The source code of this utility is hosted at https://bitbucket.org/Reivalyn/make-window-fullscreen/downloads. I encourage you to read the wiki there for more information.

The zip file contains a ReadMe.txt file that has step-by-step instructions for setting this utility up to work with EQ2.

Usage of this utility is pretty simple once a shortcut for it specific to EQ2 has been prepared by following the ReadMe instructions. To use, simply launch the game normally; when the main game window appears after pressing the Play button on the launcher, just run the MakeWindowFullscreen utility using the shortcut. Each time you launch the game you will need to run the utility to make the game window full-screen.

Version 1.2 introduces some changes to the way that the utility determines the size and location of the game window. In previous versions, the game window would always be resized to cover the area of the primary monitor. In the new version, the utility determines which monitor the game window is currently on and then resizes the game window to cover the area of that monitor. If you only use one monitor, then this shouldn't affect you.
Another change is that the utility will now resize the game windows from all running instances, whereas before it would only resize the game window of one instance. If you only run one instance of the game, then this shouldn't affect you. If you run multiple instances of the game and are having trouble, please let me know and I'll try to help.

I've tested this with my own machine and it works fine, but it's not possible for me to test or anticipate the problems that others might face. Therefore, if you have any difficulties with the utility please let me know and I'll try to resolve the problem or help you with an alternate usage that might work around the issue.

Enjoy!

Love apps like this.

If I could make any request it would be INI file support for declaring window height specifically (or width & height). I like to hide the task bar, but I dislike when the task bar comes up and covers my game windows.

Thanks!

Undocumented feature

Thanks, Drumstix42!

This is actually an undocumented feature of the utility. You can use additional parameters after the name of the process (EverQuest2) in order to specify the position and size of the window.

Go into the properties of the shortcut that you defined and change the Target to be something like the following:
C:\Tools\MakeWindowFullscreen.exe EverQuest2 0 0 1024 760
This would position the window in the upper-left corner with a width of 1024 pixels and a height of 760 pixels.

Another example:
C:\Tools\MakeWindowFullscreen.exe EverQuest2 100 50 800 600
This would make the window appear 100 pixels from the left side of the screen and 50 pixels from the top of the screen with a width of 800 pixels and height of 600 pixels.

You can run this utility at any time while the game window is open in order to resize or reposition it; you do not need to exit out of the game and relaunch it. So you can use trial-and-error to find the right size for your preference.

Just for fun, I tried using the parameters "0 0 100 50". Below are some screenshots of my fight with Varsoon at 100 x 50 resolution. The images were not resized.

This no longer functions. Anyone have a fix. The "windowed" mode is pure BS.

The utility is still working fine for me, but there was an issue found in the case where the machine running the utility does not have the .NET Framework version 4.5 installed. I have uploaded a revised zip file that can be used with a machine that only has .NET Framework version 4.0 installed. In case this was the issue that you experienced, perhaps you can give this version a try.

If that doesn't fix the issue, please share some more details regarding what the problem is, and I'll try to help. Here are some specific questions that would help narrow down what the problem might be:
  • Were you able to build/create the MakeWindowFullscreen.exe file?
  • Were you able to get through all of the instructions without a problem?
  • Can you confirm that you have the .NET Framework version 4.0 installed? (One way to check is to look for a folder named v4.0.30319 in your C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework directory.)
  • What happens when you run the shortcut?
  • Did you double-check that the Target field in the properties of the shortcut has " EverQuest2" appended to the end?
  • Are you remembering to run the shortcut after EverQuest2 has launched?
  • What happens if you run MakeWindowFullscreen.exe directly instead of using the shortcut? (You should see a window appear with a list of the programs that are currently running on your machine.)

I'm also having some issues getting the utility to work, more so with the .bat not compiling the .exe file.

Here's the error: http://i.imgur.com/a8sZI3U.png

Thanks very much for sharing the error! I've uploaded a new version of the zip file which contains a fix for the build.bat script. I don't experience that error on my machine, so I can't say for certain that the change I made will solve the problem for you, but I have at least verified that the build script does create the utility successfully on my machine.

I hope this version works out for you, and that you enjoy the utility.

I cannot tell you how much I LOVE this program, as I use 4 screens, 3 for gaming and the 4th for everything else.

Until a friend told me about this, I had to alt+tab, or use the ingame browser (shudder).

The first time I started it up yesterday, I got an error that stated it had quit working, but when I dismissed the error, it still workid like a charm.

Today when I started it up, I get the same error, but it keeps reverting the game to 1920x1080 on my far left screen rather than the 5920x1080 that I usually have.

Below is the parse of the error:

Thanks very much for the feedback! It's encouraging to hear that someone finds this useful and that it's actually been recommended.

I'll try to take a look at this later tonight. My initial thought is that the error and the behavior you describe regarding the resolution and the left-most screen are probably unrelated to each other.

I don't think that I put in much code to deal with multiple monitors, so I'll start there. Quedtion: is your left-most monitor set up as your primary monitor? That could be why the utility is resizing and moving the game window toward that monitor.

That's just speculation on why it's behaving the way that it is; regardless, I think that I need to make this utility more capable of working with multiple monitors.

The way my rig is setup is 3 monitors on bottom, that Nvidia Surround makes into 1 giant monitor with a resolution of 5920x1080, and a 4th monitor on top with a resolution of 1920x1080 that I use for everything else.

On any game that supports Borderless window, the game will run at 5920x1080, and when I click my 4th monitor, the only thing that over lays the game is the windows taskbar. In any game that does not support borderless window mode, when I alt+tab, it usually will either force the game into a smaller window, which then goes to the top left of my main monitor, essentially the far left corner of my 3 gaming screen setup, or it will minimize all together.

I will give you a couple screen shots for comparison. The black areas at the top right and left are just void. The bottom screen is what happens most of the time when I tell it to close the error. Oddly enough though, sometimes it will continue to work even after I close the error box. I never know which way it will go. Many people in our guild have multiple screens, and are just waiting for me to say it is working great to download it themselves.

I've just posted an updated version that should address the issues that you're facing. In particular, I'm pretty sure that I've addressed the error that you were getting. This had to do with the utility's user interface, which is not visible when the utility is run using the shortcut as suggested in the setup instructions. I've also made changes to improve the error handling in the user interface of the utility, but that is probably not relevant if you're just planning to run the utility via the shortcut.

Additionally, I made some changes to the way that the utility figures out where to put the game window and what size to make it. I don't have an Nvidia Surround where I can test it out, so unfortunately you may have to be the guinea pig for that. If you find that the utility is removing the border but is still not resizing the game window to the correct size, then I'd suggest editing the properties of your shortcut and changing the Target field to the following:

MakeWindowFullscreen.exe /process EverQuest2 /area 0 0 5920 1080

This will tell the utility exactly what size you want the game window to be and where you want it to be positioned. The "0 0" part tells it to put the upper-left corner of the game window at screen coordinate (0, 0), which is the upper-left corner of the primary monitor. If that is not the correct position, then you may need to adjust it to get it in the right place.

I hope this helps. If you still experience problems, let me know and I'll investigate further.

Thank you VERY much. I know how much free work you mod authors put in and rarely get thanked for what you do, so from myself and all the members of Crimson Wing with multiple monitors, we cannot tell you how much we appreciate you doing this.

I will give you an update as soon as I can and let you know how it is working.

An update for you.

First, I am no longer getting the error

Second, It successfully makes EQ2 cover all three of my gaming screens, and allows me to mouse off the game to my 4th screen. The problem starts when I click anywhere on my 4th screen, at which point the game then shrinks itself to my far left gaming screen.

On the shortcut target, when you put in EverQuest2, is it supposed to look like this

"C:\Users\Public\Sony Online Entertainment\Installed Games\MakeWindowFullscreen\MakeWindowFullscreen.exe" EverQuest2

or this

"C:\Users\Public\Sony Online Entertainment\Installed Games\MakeWindowFullscreen\MakeWindowFullscreen.exe" "EverQuest2"

If there is anything you want me to try, let me know and I will be happy to be the lab rat.

Ok, this gives me some idea of what to try out with my own machine in order to reproduce the problem.

This is not a solution, just a workaround (although an annoying one): there's no harm in running the utility multiple times, so when this happens (the window shrinks back to its previous size) you can run the utility again to restore it to the desired fullscreen size. I realize that's not ideal, but it's what you can do with the current version.

Do the titlebar and border of the window also come back when it shinks to the far left screen?

Also, just as a sanity check, can you confirm that your EQ2 display options are set to window mode, not fullscreen mode?

It makes no difference whether EverQuest2 is surrounded by double-quotes or not. Personally, I don't use the double-quotes because they are not needed. Double-quotes would be needed only if you were trying to specify something that contains a space.
